In this workshop at Länsmanshuset, we were observing how children react to the categorization of places, and if they understand the categories that we have created based on the input from our previous workshops.
Children arriving at the workshop were encouraged to start by going into a cardboard spaceship. We told them that we are going to explore an amazing new planet, and asked them where they would like to go on this planet.
They had to decide where they wanted to go by choosing from five categories shown through icons on a control panel. Once they had chosen their categories, they were asked to imagine this place and draw it or build it out of paper and add it to a collective map of this new planet we are exploring together.

The map grew throughout the workshop, filled with places children imagined and wanted to explore. The map had football pitches, beaches to play on and rest nearby, strange playgrounds, and places with alien animals.

The children going through the spaceship, regardless of age or ability, could easily relate to the categories, and understood the visual representations very quickly. There was no translation needed of what these icons meant. Everyone could understand that these were: places with water, places with animals, places for rest, places for movement, and places to be with friends.
